Wind Chill Facts

• Wind chill applies when temp ≤ 50°F (10°C)

• Requires wind speed ≥ 3 mph (5 km/h)

• Based on heat loss from exposed skin

• Used by NWS for weather warnings

Safety Tips

• Dress in layers

• Keep dry - wet clothing dangerous

• Cover exposed skin

• Watch for frostbite signs

• Stay hydrated

Wind Chill Formula & Information

National Weather Service Formula

WC = 35.74 + 0.6215×T - 35.75×V^0.16 + 0.4275×T×V^0.16

Where:

• WC = Wind Chill (°F)

• T = Air Temperature (°F)

• V = Wind Speed (mph)

• Valid for T ≤ 50°F and V ≥ 3 mph

Important Notes

• Wind chill is calculated for shaded areas

• Based on heat loss from exposed human skin

• Assumes walking speed of 3.1 mph

• Does not account for sun exposure

• More accurate than older formulas

Signs of Cold Weather Injury

Frostbite: Numbness, white/grayish skin, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy

Hypothermia: Shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech

If symptoms occur: Get medical attention immediately, move to warm area, remove wet clothing
