Speed vs Velocity
Speed:
Scalar quantity - magnitude only. How fast something moves regardless of direction.
Velocity:
Vector quantity - magnitude AND direction. Speed with directional information.
Examples:
- Car going 60 mph = speed
- Car going 60 mph north = velocity
- Average speed ≠ average velocity if direction changes
Kinematic Equations
Basic Speed:
v = d/t (speed = distance/time)
Constant Acceleration:
v = u + at
s = ut + ½at²
v² = u² + 2as
Where:
- v = final velocity, u = initial velocity
- a = acceleration, t = time
- s = displacement/distance
