Speed Calculations

Convert units or calculate motion physics

Speed vs Velocity

Speed:

Scalar quantity - magnitude only. How fast something moves regardless of direction.

Velocity:

Vector quantity - magnitude AND direction. Speed with directional information.

Examples:
  • Car going 60 mph = speed
  • Car going 60 mph north = velocity
  • Average speed ≠ average velocity if direction changes

Kinematic Equations

Basic Speed:

v = d/t (speed = distance/time)

Constant Acceleration:

v = u + at
s = ut + ½at²
v² = u² + 2as

Where:
  • v = final velocity, u = initial velocity
  • a = acceleration, t = time
  • s = displacement/distance
