Mass vs Weight

Mass:

Amount of matter in an object. Measured in kg, g, lbs. Constant everywhere.

Weight:

Force exerted by gravity on mass. Measured in Newtons (N). Weight = mass × gravity.

Examples:
  • On Moon: same mass, 1/6 the weight
  • In space: same mass, zero weight
  • On Jupiter: same mass, 2.4x the weight

Physics Formulas

Density:

ρ = m/V (density = mass/volume)

Weight:

W = mg (weight = mass × gravity)

Momentum:

p = mv (momentum = mass × velocity)

Kinetic Energy:

KE = ½mv² (kinetic energy = ½ × mass × velocity²)

Potential Energy:

PE = mgh (potential energy = mass × gravity × height)
