Understanding Exponents
What are Exponents?
An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number by itself. In the expression a^b:
- a is the base (the number being multiplied)
- b is the exponent (how many times to multiply)
- The result is called the power
Types of Exponents
Positive Exponents: 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8
Negative Exponents: 2⁻³ = 1/(2³) = 1/8 = 0.125
Fractional Exponents: 8^(1/3) = ∛8 = 2
Zero Exponent: 5⁰ = 1 (any number to power 0 is 1)
